Although Deadlock has weapons, the game should not be considered a common FPS; Understand

Valve’s latest competitive title, Deadlock, is quickly taking the gaming community by storm. Since the start of the closed alpha, thousands of players have been diving into the experience, while many more have been watching the game stream on Twitch. However, while the game is entertaining for many, the community is still trying to pinpoint exactly what Deadlock is and who it’s designed for.

Opinions about the game are quite varied. Some say it resembles a version of Dota 2 in third person , while others claim it is directly competing with Smite and Predecessor .

Furthermore, there are also those who believe that Deadlock is Valve's attempt at a hero shooter . This last interpretation is especially interesting, considering Valve's track record of revolutionizing the FPS genre in the 2000s.

While it is possible to shoot in Deadlock , it does not follow the traditional FPS formula. In fact, Deadlock seems to function as a sort of "anti-shooter." In games like Counter-Strike , Call of Duty , and even titles like Overwatch , accuracy and aim are key. However, in Deadlock

Your character's weapon — be it a rifle, a shotgun, or even a "gun" gesture with your fingers — does so little damage that it's hard to consider it a "shooter."

Often times you will need to unload an entire clip into an enemy to reduce only half of his life. And if you retreat a few meters, the damage decreases even more due to the mechanics of damage drop of the game. It seems that Valve designed the system to discourage traditional play style of an FPS, where most of the time the shots are lethal or cause a lot of damage.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that weapons are not the main focus — that role is reserved for Skills and Ultimates of the characters. Skills are unlocked as you level up and evolve throughout the game by purchasing items from shops scattered around the spawn points.
